These works explore the (physical and emotional) in–between, or what the Japanese sometimes call ma—the perception of a gap, void, or interval. With references to Beckett’s Waiting for Godot (with its futile anticipation) and Malevich’s Black Square (the ultimate ideal ceremonially placed in the room’s upper corner), the drawings aim to show two stages of this space (one less hopeful than the other). Each distance, size, and circumference in the drawings (divisible by either 3 or 7) refer to various concepts within this idea: the ultimate ideal (and its possible dissolution), the driving force behind one’s actions, the mental claustrophobia, the possible resolution.
